I Have Been Scammed!What Can I Do?

Take urgent action to recover stolen funds or assets

Being scammed is not only financially devastating—it’s emotionally distressing and can leave you feeling powerless. At Brown & Solicitors, we regularly help clients who have been misled, defrauded, or manipulated out of their hard-earned money—particularly online. Whether you’ve lost funds through an investment scam, fake crypto platform, romance scam, or fraudulent e-commerce transaction, there are immediate legal steps you can take to protect your position.

1. Preserve Evidence Immediately

Time is critical. Before doing anything else:

Take screenshots of all communication (emails, texts, chats, social media messages).

Download or save any transaction records (bank statements, crypto wallet logs).

Record usernames, URLs, phone numbers and any identifiable contact points.

This evidence will be vital for reporting the scam and taking legal action.

2.Report the Scam to Authorities

You should immediately report the scam to:

Action Fraud (UK): www.actionfraud.police.uk

Your bank or payment provider: Request a chargeback or fraud investigation.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA): If an unregulated or clone investment firm was involved. This creates a paper trail and may improve your chances of a refund or prosecution.

3. Instruct Solicitors to Freeze Assets (Where Possible)

Where funds can be traced—especially if the scammer has UK-based accounts, crypto wallets, or other assets—we can apply to court for:

Freezing orders (injunctions) to stop assets being moved.

Disclosure orders forcing banks, platforms or third parties to reveal information about where your money went.

Norwich Pharmacal Orders to uncover identities behind anonymous accounts or platforms.

We act quickly and urgently, often on the same day, to apply for these orders and prevent further loss.

4. Civil Recovery of Funds

We can issue civil proceedings for fraud, breach of contract or unjust enrichment. In some cases, we may also pursue third parties—such as negligent payment processors or platforms that enabled the scam—to widen recovery options.

5. Reporting for Criminal Prosecution

We assist in compiling and submitting evidence to police and regulatory bodies, and work alongside criminal investigators when parallel investigations are opened.
